黒潮に乗って多くの海洋生物が島周囲には集まり、ミナミハンドウイルカ（御蔵島周辺の個体らが本島や利島等伊豆諸島周辺海域や本州沿岸に定着を始めたと思われる）やウミガメ等が見られ、鯨類は捕鯨時代以前と比べ非常に数も種類も少ないが、黒潮に乗ってきたマッコウクジラやザトウクジラ、マンタなどが近海で見られる事もある。外曲輪（一部中曲輪）の門から東西南北に延びる街道沿いにも市街地が広がり、町人地や足軽等の下級藩士の住居、家老の下屋敷が置かれていた。
