仮面と黒衣に隠れた本体は紫色の人魂に小さい眼と手がついた赤ん坊のような生命体として未完成な形態をしており、「名無し」という呼び名も名付けられぬままこの世を去ったことの所以である。妖怪世界でも知られていないため、妖怪について博識な目玉おやじも対面するまで存在を全く知らなかった。現在は華の中に魂が存在し、人間の強い心の絆がある限り絶対安全の隠し場所のはずだったが、時代が経つと共に人の心が荒み、かつて無いほどに絆が弱ったことで不完全だが復活を遂げ、自身の肉体を完全に復活させ、人間も妖怪も全て滅ぼそうと企む。

南西部には上田原が広がり、千曲川沿いに下ると埴科郡を経て善光寺方面へ至り、逆に上流へと遡ると佐久郡を経て上野国や甲斐国に至る。東太郎山の尾根上に築かれ、南の上田平や北東の真田郷を一望できる位置にあり、南東には北佐久を望むことも出来る。築城年代は不明だが、隣接する真田郷に興った真田氏の外城として築城されたのが最初とされている（当時の状況は不明）。上州街道を真田郷を経て鳥居峠を越えると上野国吾妻郡に至る。
